Interesting facts about the Expanded Canal

The great construction of the Expanded Panama Canal continues to marvel local residents and visitors alike. And this comes as no surprise.

Some interesting facts are related to the amount of material utilized. For example, the 192 thousand tons of steel required for the construction of Third Set of Locks could be used to build 19 Eiffel Towers.

In addition, the new locks’ chambers measure 1,400 feet in length, enough space to place New York’s iconic Empire State Building.
