George Washington Goethals was a civil engineer and United States Army officer, famous for supervising the construction of the Panama Canal.
Its creation
Designed by Alfred Shaw, it was dedicated on March 31, 1954 as a reminder of the prominence of Goethals work and to show both residents of the then Canal Zone as well as the thousands that have come upon this colossal structure, this man’s achievements: he overcame major problems to accomplish great feats and gave us the wonder that Panama shares with the world.
